(BrightCitizen.com) Amazon, the retail window for nearly 1/3 of America’s book selling is bullying. What is happening? Amazon is discouraging customers from buying books by Malcolm Gladwell, Stephen Colbert, J. D. Salinge, and many others. Why?
These books are under the large publisher Hachette. Hachette publishes under various brands, but Amazon is trying to force them to bow to their sales power and demands. So how do they do it? When you search for the Stephen Colbert book on Amazon.com, they have raised the price by $2-5 dollars more than Barnes & Noble. However, if you really want to buy it, the king of 2-day shipping says you will need to wait several weeks to receive your product.
This raises concerns among publishers as well as their customers. Amazon is just becoming a bit too powerful. Even ultra-left New York Times is writing about it here. Others are saying it’s time for the US government antitrust auditors to visit the Seattle-based Amazon. However there could be fear of Amazon and the Jeff Bezos empire. After all, he now owns WaPo (the Washington Post) in Washington DC and may pressure them much like William Randolph Hearst flexed his media muscles in years past.
